Lhamo Echoes Across the Plateau

Filmed across Lhasa, Shigatse, and Shannan in July 2026, this documentary explores traditional Tibetan Opera (Lhamo) through the lens of sound culture. Moving between the Tibetan plateau, backstage preparations, communal performances, and sacred monasteries, it examines how Lhamo’s chanting, percussion, and rhythms interact with the surrounding landscape and Tibetan religious practices.

Rather than presenting Lhamo simply as a performing art, the documentary explores how its sounds extend beyond the stage, connecting the ecological environment, spiritual devotion, community life, and intergenerational cultural memory. Through video and field recordings, I wanted to capture not only what Lhamo looks like, but also how its sound continues to resonate throughout Tibetan cultural life.
